What Happens Before a Single Yard of Concrete Ever Gets Poured
The pour itself is the fast part. Getting the ground ready underneath it is most of the job.

Most people see a concrete truck show up, watch a crew screed and finish a driveway or a pad in an afternoon, and figure that is the whole project. The pour is actually the fast part. Almost everything that decides whether that concrete lasts twenty years or cracks and settles in three happens before the truck ever gets there. None of that groundwork is visible in the finished slab, which is exactly why it is the part that gets shortcut on a rushed job and the part worth asking about before you hire anyone.
Clearing the Site
The first step is getting rid of whatever is growing or sitting on the site, grass, brush, stumps, old pavement. That material has to go because organic matter breaks down over time, and concrete poured on top of ground that is still decomposing underneath it will eventually settle as that material rots away and the soil compacts on its own, unevenly, without anyone controlling it. Old pavement or a buried tree stump left in place does the same thing over a longer timeline, and it usually shows up as a dip or a crack right over the spot that was never actually cleared.
Stripping the Topsoil
Topsoil looks fine to build on but it is full of organic material and it does not compact the way a slab needs its base to compact. It gets stripped off down to subsoil that will actually hold weight, then either stockpiled on site for landscaping later or hauled off, depending on what the rest of the job needs. How deep that strip needs to go varies by site, some lots have six inches of good topsoil, others have two feet of it, and you do not know which until you start digging and look at what is actually there.
Cutting and Filling to Grade
Once the site is down to subsoil, it gets cut and filled to the elevation the design actually calls for, with slope built in to carry water away from the structure rather than toward it. This is where a lot of future drainage problems either get solved or get baked in permanently. Getting the grade wrong here is the kind of mistake that does not show up until the first heavy rain, sometimes not until the first spring thaw. It also has to account for anything else nearby that drains toward the same spot, a downspout, a neighboring slope, a low corner of the yard, because a grade plan that only looks at the pad itself and ignores everything around it tends to move the water problem rather than solve it.
Compaction Is the Step Nobody Sees Later
Loose soil settles under weight, unevenly, wherever it is loosest. Compaction packs the subgrade down in layers with a roller or plate compactor so it behaves like one solid, predictable surface instead of a bunch of soft spots waiting to sink. Once the slab is poured on top, this step is invisible, which is exactly why it is the one that gets skipped on a rushed job and shows up two winters later as a crack running across a driveway or a low spot where water starts pooling. Compaction gets checked in stages as material is added, not just once at the end, because a soft spot buried under several inches of fill is a lot harder to find and fix than one caught while the ground is still open.
Base Material, Then Forms, Then the Pour
On top of the compacted subgrade goes a layer of crushed stone or gravel, compacted again, which gives the slab a stable, well draining base to sit on instead of resting directly on soil that can hold water against it. Only after all of that is forms set to the finished grade, reinforcement placed where the design calls for it, and then, finally, the concrete truck actually gets called. By the time anyone can watch a crew screed and finish the surface, the work that actually decided how that slab is going to hold up has already been done and buried out of sight.
