Concrete on a Working Farm Is a Different Job Than a Driveway
Farm pads, feed alleys and manure pits get treated the way they get used, not the way a homeowner's driveway does.

A driveway gets driven on by cars, mostly, a few times a day. A farm pad gets driven on by skid steers, manure spreaders, grain trucks and tractors, loaded heavy, every single day, sometimes multiple times an hour during a busy season. That difference in how it actually gets used changes almost everything about how it should be built. A contractor who only ever pours driveways and patios can still pour a technically sound farm slab, but a lot of the decisions that actually matter on an ag site, thickness, reinforcement, how it is laid out around existing buildings and equipment paths, come from having done that kind of work before.
The Loads Are Heavier and They Do Not Stop
Residential concrete is designed around occasional, relatively light loads, a car, a delivery truck now and then. Agricultural concrete has to hold up under equipment that is heavier and on it constantly, turning tight circles, backing trailers, dropping loaded buckets. That kind of repeated heavy use wears on a slab differently than a driveway ever will, and a pad built to residential specs under that kind of traffic will crack and break up fast. Point loads matter too, a loaded skid steer bucket or an outrigger from a bigger piece of equipment puts weight on a small area of concrete rather than spreading it out the way tires on a car do, and a slab that is not built for that kind of load shows it first at exactly those spots.
Why Farm Slabs Get Built Thicker
Because the loads are heavier and more frequent, a farm pad or alley generally needs to be poured thicker than a driveway, with reinforcement placed to match what is actually going to roll across it. What is right for a specific pad depends on what equipment uses it and how often, which is why walking the site and talking through how it actually gets used matters more on a farm job than it does on most residential work. A feed alley that sees a skid steer scraping across it daily needs a different answer than a pad where a grain truck parks a few times a season, even though both are technically farm concrete.
Manure Pits Are a Different Kind of Concrete Work Entirely
A manure pit is not a slab you drive across, it is concrete built to hold and contain material below grade, under constant moisture and exposure that a driveway or even a farm pad never sees. The structural design, the joints, and how the concrete itself is specified all have to account for that, it is a genuinely different job from flatwork, closer to building a tank than pouring a pad. Getting it right matters more than almost anything else on a farm site, because a failure there is not a cosmetic crack, it is a structure meant to hold and contain material, and it needs to be built and inspected with that in mind from the start.
Drainage and Containment Are Not the Same Question as on a Driveway
On a driveway, drainage means getting water away from the house. On a farm site, where that water goes and what it might be carrying matters a lot more, and the right answer depends on the specific operation, the layout of the property, and what is actually being contained. That is not something to guess at from general rules of thumb, it is worth talking through with whoever is doing the concrete work before anything gets poured. Every operation is laid out a little differently, buildings, slopes, existing drainage, and a plan that works on one farm does not automatically transfer to the one down the road, even if the two operations look similar from the outside.
Excavation Is Usually Part of the Same Job
Farm concrete work rarely stands alone. A new pad or pit usually needs grading first to get equipment access right, and often needs drainage worked out around it so runoff from the site goes where it is supposed to instead of pooling against a building or running toward a spot it should not. Handling the excavation and the concrete as one job, rather than two separate contractors working around each other, tends to produce a site that actually functions the way it was planned rather than one where the grading and the pour do not quite line up.
